I am putting this series of artworks together in hopes of bringing awareness to gender gaps in various professions around the world while also hoping to show the fun and creative side of what data science can offer – a branch of study that’s very close to my heart.

10,000 images that make up each artwork were created using a data science machine learning technique called GAN (more specifically StyleGAN by NVIDIA), by learning from thousands of human drawn images.

At the time of creating this work, at home in Australia, out of our entire professional engineering workforce only 13% are women.

This CEO does not yet exist

At the time of creating this work, at home in Australia, out of 300 largest companies only 6% are managed by a female CEO. In US, the number is 8% for Furtune 500 companies and similarly 8% in UK in top 100 companies.

This Data Scientist does not yet exist

At the time of creating this work, globally it is estimated that only 15% of data scientist are women, despite more than half of STEM graduates being women.

Reflecting back and looking at these pieces with fresh eyes a few weeks later, I’m not a fan of black and white composition. I really want to bump the quality by ~1000 generations more and reconstruct in colour to make these a touch more vibrant!
